The Clara Carson third grade class took a trip yesterday to the Cradle of Aviation in Nassau County. The Historic Museum is dedicated to the memory of Flight & is something to see!. It seems that this little area in Hemp stead, NY; (close to Hofstra’s Campus,) was a site where people from all over NYC would travel to see the new flying machines. This area was Prairie land so by it’s natural flatness made a terrific airport. Just imagine at the turn of the 20Th century people gathering to see these noisy clunky machines gain altitude, become aloft, only to get smaller and smaller into the sky.
We saw hot air balloons, propeller sea crafts /fighter planes and some thing called an X48 which harnesses mach 10 power it is 10,000 times the speed of sound. Kamaal my hero did the math.
I was struck by the shear Audacity: that our human race would dare to think that we could fly. How like a contagion it took hold of a few, then the many, then multitudes. Men and woman alike caught on and created better and better crafts. I have a vivid imagination so being surrounded by like minds of:Xavier, Samantha, Daniel, Briana & DJ.& Leah who willingly acted out the part of the pilot and co pilot I was transported back in time to what this new novelty might have been like. It swept the nation and the World, and led to the first man on the moon and all that came after that.
Amelia Earhart caught my eye. Lost /Disappeared /Gone. Those are the words that usually come to mind when I think of her. Where did she go? Now I think of words like: Courage, Daring and Exuberance. These qualities seem now to me so apparent in the photo of her. Above is a poem I found in her notes which gives us a closer look at the heart she had.
What makes your imagination soar? What is an expression your exuberance?
Thanks to the thoughtful teachers of Clara Carlson (especially Ms. Cochran) who are teaching our next leaders to dream big. They are so right to point to the possibilities. I really enjoyed this trip.
